Topi Anjala took his place at the top of the results list on the middle distance WC qualification today on FIN5. The runners-up were slight surprises: Hannu Airila (KR), Timo Saarinen (TP) and Simo-Pekka Fincke (VeVe) took the places 2-4, respectively. The women's race was won by Karoliina Sundberg running for Lynx, although the favourite, Merja Rantanen (KooVee), came close in the end losing by a narrow margin of 4 seconds. The experienced Vroni König-Salmi (+26 s) places third today.
Organizers were happy to see as many as 3,300 runners during the Day 1 of FIN5 in the terrains of Hauho.

Welcome to FIN5 orienteering week!Hämeenlinna Sun 12.7. 9:30
Today Sunday the long wait is finally over when the first orienteers are set loose at exactly 1 pm. In the 21elite-classes practically all the best Finnish runners are present. The reason is that the first four days of FIN5 are also Finnish qualifying races for the World Orienteering Championships in August in Hungary. H/D21E classes will have the privilege to run middle distance courses in the Kenkivuori hilly terrain North of the event center all by themselves. All the other orienteers will have to wait until Monday to get there. For them today it’s about "shortened long distance" action in Hankala ridge ("karst") terrain South of the event center. "Hankala", by the way, translates to "difficult" or "tricky"…
Note, that there will be no prize giving on Sunday. The prize giving ceremony for both 1st and 2nd day will be held on Monday evening at Tuulonen shopping center.
For those who were unable to make it to FIN5 but want to follow the event, we are glad to announce that there will be results online, plenty of photos and daily reports (also in English).
We wish the best of luck for ALL the competitors for the whole week!
